The JimFear138 Podcast Ep.88 - Emergency Ramblecast

Hello everyone and welcome to another episode of the podcast! Now I know you guys were expecting me to have Jesse Abraham Lucas on the show this week, but unfortunately there was a completely unfixable problem with the audio recording, and I'm forced to scrap that. I've talked with him, and we're going to try for the next podcast, barring life getting in the way. In the meantime, have this rambling talk about the new Tumblrcats Meow show and the motivations behind such an atrocity, and a talk about Robert E. Howard and how his writing has effected my own style since I've started reading him seriously. There was no plan to this one, so expect plenty of divergences, but I hope y'all enjoy it all the same!

  1. Love your podcasts so far, man, and I usually don't have the patience for them. Robert E. Howard is not only my favorite pulp writer, he has become one of my favorite writers of all time.

I've grown up on bloated Epic Fantasy with nihilistic worldviews so I could hardly imagine that a fantasy story could be told in less than 200 pages, let alone in short stories, but reading Poul Anderson's Three Hearts and Three Lions proved me wrong of the former, and discovering Howard's short stories proved me wrong of the latter. Just the Conan stories alone put 95% of Fantasy fiction out today to shame, because of how endlessly entertaining they are. If the best criticism against Howard is that he was every "-ism" imaginable on earth, then I think the middle finger can be safely extended towards the general direction these pretentious douchebags with awful tastes in fiction. From Solomon Kane to Conan the Cimmerian, to the very underrated Kull of Atlantis and sailor Steve Costigan, Howard's work was vast, diverse, thrilling and with rarely a dud encountered.

Anyone that will ever ask me to name my favorite writer won't find Rape Rape Martin or Stephen Hack-uh, I mean King in it, but they'll find Robert E. Howard with no shame or guilt behind the decision.

P.S. I'll give your stories a try since you mentioned that you are unconsciously becoming inspired by Howard. We need more stories like that.

    1. The more I read of Howard, the more convinced I am that he's the greatest writer America ever produced. His work flows like poetry without the pretension, and the conversations are just as tense as the action. I'm not just unconsciously being influenced and inspired by him, it's a very deliberate process of note-taking and testing out the things he did in my own work, in my own ways. I'm not the best judge of my success, but I hope you enjoy the stories nonetheless!
